Central Banks: Monetary policy reviews in Poland and Malaysia are scheduled in the coming week. The Fed Beige Book of recent regional economic conditions gets published Wednesday, and market participants also will be monitoring ongoing developments in President Trump’s attempt to fire Fed Governor Cook “for cause” and her counter-suit of the legality of his move. At stake is nothing less than the future independence of the central bank in handling monetary policy as best as its officials deem appropriate to carry out the congressionally-mandated goals of price stability and employment maximization.
Holidays: Labor Day in the United States and Canada on Monday.
Purchasing Managers Surveys: A wide array of August surveys covering manufacturing, services, and construction.
Scheduled U.S. Economic Data Releases: Quarterly productivity and unit labor costs. Monthly unemployment, non-farm payroll jobs, average hourly earnings, factory orders, construction spending, motor vehicle sales, JOLTS report on job quits and hires, ADP estimate of newly created private sector jobs, factory orders, and the trade balance. Weekly jobless insurance claims, mortgage applications, chain store sales and energy inventories.
Euroland Releases: consumer prices, producer prices, retail sales, unemployment and quarterly GDP and employment growth.
Members of the Euro Area: Italian, Irish, Lithuanian, Cypriot, Slovakian and Austrian GDP. French current account and trade balance. Dutch, Italian, Portuguese and Slovakian retail sales. Portuguese, Latvian, Estonian and Croatian industrial production. Italian PPI and Austrian wholesale prices. German factory orders and Estonian CPI.
U.K. and Switzerland: British retail sales and the Nationwide and Halifax house price indices. Swiss consumer prices and retail sales.
Eastern Europe: Polish, Bulgarian, Romanian and Hungarian GDP. Romanian, Hungarian and Czech retail sales. Romanian and Hungarian producer prices.
Nordic Europe: Norwegian industrial production and consumer prices. Sweden’s current account.
Japanese Releases: Monetary base, household consumption, average cash earnings and index of leading economic indicators.
Other Selected Asian Data: Indonesian, South Korean and Filipino CPI. Retail sales in Hong Kong and Singapore. Indonesia’s trade balance.
Australia, South Africa and Turkey: Australian GDP, current account, trade balance building permits, and business investment. South African business confidence and current account. Turkish GDP, CPI, PPI and trade balance.
Brazil and Mexico: Brazilian GDP, industrial production, PPI, and trade balance. Mexican consumer confidence and business sentiment.
Canadian Releases: Productivity, unit labor costs, employment growth, unemployment rate, average hourly wages, and IVEY-PMI survey.
