Central Banks: Interest rate policy reviews scheduled in the week ahead features the Bank of Japan, which is expected to double the current 0.25% rate level and will also publish a new quarterly Outlook for Economic Activity and Prices with updated forecasts. BOJ Governor Ueda will then hold a press conference. Policy meetings are also scheduled in Turkey, Norway, Ukraine, China, Malaysia, South Africa and Uzbekistan.
Holidays and Special Events: The full Israeli cabinet votes Sunday on the cease-fire deal with Hamas. Donald Trump will take the oath of office at noon on Monday to begin his non-consecutive second term as U.S. president. Many executive orders and other actions are to begin almost immediately. Monday also happens to be a U.S. federal holiday, commemorating what would have been Martin Luther King, Jr’s 96th birthday. Meetings of the Eurogroup and the euro zone finance ministers will be held early in the week, and the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland runs Monday through Friday with a theme of The Intelligent Age: a Time for Cooperation.
Schedule U.S. Economic Data Releases: Preliminary S&P Global purchasing manager survey results, the U. Michigan/Reuters index of consumer sentiment, existing home sales, the Conference Board-compiled index of leading economic indicators, and the K.C. Fed monthly manufacturing survey. Weekly jobless insurance claims, energy inventories, chain store sales, and mortgage applications.
Euroland Releases: Construction output, consumer confidence, the ZEW index of investor sentiment, and preliminary PMI results for January.
Members of the Euro Area: German and French PMI surveys and Conference Board-compiled indices of leading economic indicators. French, Spanish, German, Estonian, Slovenian, Irish and Finnish producer prices. Germany’s ZEW index of investor sentiment and IFO Institute business climate survey. Dutch, Slovenian, and Belgian consumer confidence. French business confidence and Lithuanian retail sales.
U.K. and Switzerland: British preliminary PMI results, Rightmove house price index, labor market statistics (e.g. employment, unemployment, wage growth), industrial trends and distributive trades indices, and public sector net borrowing. Swiss PPI and import prices.
Eastern Europe: Polish PPI, retail sales and industrial production. Czech business confidence and consumer sentiment.
Nordic Europe: Icelandic and Swedish producer prices. Icelandic CPI and Danish consumer confidence.
Japanese Releases: Machinery orders, industrial production, capacity usage, tertiary index, international reserves, consumer prices and preliminary PMI findings.
Selected Other Asian Data: Indian PMIs and index of leading economic indicators. South Korean PPI, GDP and consumer sentiment. Singaporean industrial production and CPI. Filipino trade balance.
Australia and New Zealand: Australian PMI surveys, NAB indices of business confidence and business conditions, and Westpac index of leading economic indicators. New Zealand fourth quarter CPI and December service sector purchasing managers index.
South Africa and Turkey: South African CPI, retail sales, and leading business cycle barometer. Turkish consumer confidence.
Canada and Mexico: Canadian PPI, retail sales, and home prices. Mexican trade balance.
