The unexpected breath of this week’s Republican Party election victory is not expected to impede previous signals by the Fed of a likely modest interest rate hike at this month’s scheduled monetary policy review. There previously has been only a single 50-basis point cut from peak, which happened at the prior meeting on September 18. A smaller 25-bp cut now would take the federal funds target down to 4.25-4.50%. That’s comfortably above the Fed’s preferred indicator of U.S. inflation, which as of September was 2.1% overall and 2.7% for core PCE.
Compared to levels on September 18, monetary conditions in the U.S. have tightened in two ways. First, the dollar is 7.8% stronger against the yen and 3.0% stronger versus the euro now than then. Secondly, long-term interest rates are sharply higher now. The 10-year treasury yield has climbed 67 basis points in that span, for instance, and the 30-year fixed mortgage rate has risen 62 bps in the last six weeks.
Other evidence will be gleaned from Powell’s responses at the press conference that starts at 14:30 EST. He may get questioned about President-Elect Trump’s voiced hope to make Federal Reserve policy less independent from the federal government’s control. Trump initially promoted Powell to replace former Chairperson Yellen, but he was critical of the Powell-led FOMC for doubling the federal funds target between December 2017 and a year later.
